Shelton: The City of Shelton has moved into its second century. It was incorporated on January 22, 1889. Today, the city is governed by three commissioners elected-at-large, and consists of Mayor John Tarrant, Commissioner of Finance Dick Taylor, and Commissioner of Public Works Dawn Pannell. The commissioners are elected to four-year terms. Shelton is one of the three remaining commission forms of municipal governments in Washington State.Shelton is a full-service city and offers its residents police and fire protection, countywide E-911 emergency dispatching service, parks and recreation programs, city-owned and operated water, sewer and garbage service, as well as a curbside recycling program.
While experiencing dramatic retail expansion in parts of the city, the preservation and revitalization of Shelton's historic downtown is a priority of the present commission. City staff works with the Shelton-Mason County Chamber and the Olde Towne Shelton Association, a Main Street Program, to find ways to maintain healthy growth and preserve Shelton's small town heart.
