Ellensburg: Located in the heart of the beautiful Kittitas Valley and in the center of Washington State, historic Ellensburg is home to year round recreational activities, numerous events, excellent shopping and dining, and a variety of performing and visual arts. Ellensburg, which is approximately 110 miles east of Seattle and 170 miles west of Spokane, has become a popular hub for concerts at the nearby Gorge Amphitheater, water skiing on the Columbia River, skiing at Snoqualmie, horseback riding, golf, fly fishing, river rafting, rock climbing, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing. Ellensburg's historic shopping district offers a wide variety of cultural activities, eclectic shops, pubs and restaurants.Nestled just east of the Cascade Mountain Range and South of the Stuart Mountains, Ellensburg experiences less than ten inches of precipitation a year, more than 300 days of sunshine, and four distinct seasons.
The Kittitas Valley was once a neutral area in which the mutually hostile Wenatchee, Nez Perce and Yakima Indians hunted and fished together in peace.
The name of the town came from one of the first settlers, Mary Ellen Stewart. Ellensburg is near Interstate 90 in Kittitas County, east of the summit of the Cascades.
