Eatonville: A town on the Mashel River, 33 miles SE of Tacoma in Pierce County. Eatonville is the first stop to scenic recreation areas such as Mount Rainier National Park, Gifford Pinchot and Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forests. Lands surrounding Eatonville are heavily wooded and are federally, state, and privately held. Forestry has traditionally provided the main economic base for Eatonville. With declines in the timber industry, Eatonville is transitioning into a bedroom community for Puget Sound cities and gateway community for surrounding recreational opportunities. Some residents now commute to work in Puget Sound cities, such as Tacoma, Seattle, Olympia, and Puyallup. Historically, Eatonville has been the commercial hub of rural southern Pierce County, however, encroaching commercial development from Puyallup and Tacoma has affected local business owners.
