Boulevard Park and Riverton are forgotten neighborhoods. The area is dominated by noise from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, and nearby freeway sounds from every direction. Home prices are among the cheapest in King County. There are no sidewalks, and the area has been plagued by crime. "This is the area that nobody wants," said Carol Fallis, co-president of Folks for Boulevard Park. which is surrounded by Seattle, Burien, Tukwila and SeaTac.Years of neglect have taken a toll on this 2-square-mile area, which is home to nearly 10,000 people.
But some residents of the community – bounded by the Duwamish River, state Route 509, South 96th Street and South 128th Street – are fighting to make things better. In 1998, police raided the Virgil Apartments, which were a magnet for crime. Now the apartments are taken care of by a local church, and a citizen patrol walks the neighborhood three times a week.
Block Watch groups meet regularly, but there have been hurdles in getting more residents involved because of language gaps.
